Military readiness requires corrosion protection

Most of our major allies are peace loving societies where going to war or conducting any major military action is the last thing that a nation wants.  Yet most of these countries have substantial military assets that with good fortune will never be used in action.    While having military assets that don’t need to be used is a good thing, the equipment needs to be ready to use at a moment’s notice.

This leads to a problem that many militaries have where equipment and spare parts are stored for long periods of times.   Long term corrosion protection is a must for military readiness.

Cortec has a variety of products suitable for military applications[ds1] .   These products help militaries preserve equipment so that they are combat ready after extended periods of storage or shipments.  Nothing can hamper military readiness more than corrosion.   This includes corrosion on the outside as well as corrosion in fuel tanks, water lines and oil reservoirs.

Cortec has worked with the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) to enhance corrosion protection on military equipment.   In September 2012, MoD required some testing to determine low cost solutions for corrosion protection of CVRs during transport.   CVR stands for Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance.  It is family of mobile fighting vehicles that are tracked and armored.   This classification includes light reconnaissance tanks, armored personnel carriers, ambulances and anti-tank guided missile carriers.

The trial consisted of washing down the CVRs with VpCI® -415 and VpCI® – 389 D.  VpCI®  -132 foam pads were also used on the vehicle interior.  One side of the vehicles was treated and the other side was  left untreated.

The results of the tests were remarkable, sides and vehicles treated with Cortec products showed significantly less degradation than non-treated assets.

The left side was treated with VpCI® -389 D while the right side was left untreated.  As one can see from looking at the top images the left side looked completely corrosion free while the right side is showing significant degradation due to corrosion.   The trial concluded that Cortec could provide an easy low cost solution that more than met the MoD requirements.

Another case study with the MoD involved testing to determine effective methods for protecting spare parts while being transported in ISO containers.  The test consisted of hanging bare metal plates in three separate ISO containers.  One container sprayed with VpCI®-132, one treated with VpCI® -132 foam pads and the third container was not treated.  The results were significant as both containers that had the treatment showed no degradation while the untreated container showed degradation.
