Considerations for shipping cases

softsidedmedicalDelivering a product from point A to point B can involve a number of transports, storages and handling steps. In many cases, a package departs from a loading dock, gets loaded on a truck and ultimately arrives at another loading dock where the package is unloaded.   In this case many “hands” can get involved, most of them not intimately familiar with the function of the contents.

There is another type of situation where a single person is directly involved in the transport and use of the contents. While the container may leave the direct supervision of that person during parts of the transport, ultimately the person who started the transport, ends up with it.

The product container is normally a shipping or carrying case and common situations include sales demo kits, electronic testing equipment, medical products and others.   The person “tied” to the case could be a sales person, a technician or a medical responder. Shipping cases come in a lot of shapes, sizes and variations, there are a number of considerations when determining the style and design of a shipping case.

  • Product protection: The case has to adequately protect the contents from the normal “jostling” that could occur during transport, storage and use.
  • Durability: In most cases the technician or sales person carries this case to many different locations and is repeatedly loading and unloading the contents.
  • Ease of use: Someone is usually transporting the case for at least part of the transport.   If they are flying, they may check the case in as baggage, but they pick up the case at baggage claim.   The case must be easy to transport and ergonomically designed to minimize wear and tear on the person as well as the product.
  • Organized: Often there are several components in the case and the person must be able to easily load and unload the contents in an efficient manner.   Each component must be in its own place and stay in that place throughout the transport.
  • Branding:   The case contents are often used for selling or promoting an organization. Normally the case needs to be decorated to display the corporate or organization image.

Packnet fabricates two basic styles of shipping cases or carrying cases: Hard sided case and soft sided case.

Hard sided shipping cases

Hard sided cases are usually for very delicate equipment or when “brand image” is important such as a sales demo kit. They can come with rollers which make them easier to lug.   They are very durable and can be locked for tight security. The cases can be air and water tight. The walls can also have routered openings for access to power. Packnet uses Gemstar shipping cases and can customize them to fit the exact needs of the client.   Hard sided cases can have a number of hardware add-ons that would not be practical for a soft sided case. Gemstar cases come with a lifetime warrantee.

Soft sided shipping cases

Soft sided cases tend to be lighter and easier to transport. They are ideal for emergency medical personnel who may need to quickly get to the victim while lugging a medical case.   The soft sides make it more comfortable for carrying on ones shoulder or back. They are usually easier to store or stow than hard sided shipping cases.

Packnet can customize both styles of shipping cases with foam inserts, padded walls/ pockets, and other added hardware.   Packnet can custom decorate the case with hot stamped, printed or sewn graphics and the cases are available in a variety of colors.
