Corrosion is one of the most common causes of equipment failure

According to a recent press release, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TBS) released its findings on a yearlong investigation of a Bell 206B Helicopter malfunction during a training exercise in September 2011.   The instructor and student were doing flight training in Thunder Bay Ontario, when the clutch failed to work properly and the helicopter was forced to land.  The investigation concluded that water in the transmission oil caused metal components to corrode, flake off and clog the transmission system.

Corrosion is a common cause of equipment failure.   Corrosion can weaken metal causing structural issues, or corroded metal can flake off into fluids and damage or clog systems.  Corrosion can cause electronic circuit boards to fail due to reducing electrical connection conductivity.  In short, many of the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic failures that we see in everything from simple motors to complex industrial equipment are caused by corrosion.
