There are numerous issues to consider when designing your export crating and planning the transport.  Below are four common roadblocks to transporting your product overseas:

Wrong Crate Size:  A difference of just a few inches in outside crate dimensions can make a difference in what aircraft can transport your crate.  All crated products that are 64” or less in height can be moved via passenger or cargo planes, and these options provide the most flexibility when shipping domestically or internationally.  Other options can affect delivery schedule and cost.

Failing to Understand Regulations:  Some hazardous substances, types of wood and other content may be restricted or banned depending on where and how the product is being shipped.   One must understand the international and local laws of the destination country in order to make sure your crate is not hung up in customs somewhere.   ISPM15 requirements which specify the type of heat treating and fumigation of materials is a commonly misunderstood regulation.

Improper or Incomplete Paperwork and Labeling:  It is critical the export crates have the correct labeling as well as other documentation to go through customs.   Even minor omissions can result in major delays.

Not Protecting Your Product from Corrosion:  Products being shipped via the ocean are going to be exposed to sea water mists which contain a high level of corrosive salt.  Failure to protect your product from extended exposure to corrosive air can lead to product damage.

Failing to Consider Physical Damage:  Often ocean freight has to endure rough seas, products can easily slide inside crates if not completely secured and cushioned.   Also cargo is stacked up to 8 feet high to utilize the cargo space.  Crating must be able to withstand the weight of other cargo being stacked upon it.   Any large product that is not rectangular in shape must be crated and ideally palletized to ensure ease of handling, and facilitate the use of the loading and unloading equipment.
